Mitsubishi announced the release of the GTO high-performance all-wheel-drive sports car in October, 1990.
The GTO line-up includes the base model with a 6G72 V-6 2972cc DOHC engine that makes 225 horsepower and a choice of 5 speed manual transmission or 4 speed automatic transmission, and GTO twinturbo with a 6G72 V-6 2972cc DOHC twin turbocharged engine that makes 280 horsepower and 5 speed manual transmission.
1992.01 : There were some changes. The GTO adopts electric fold-in door mirrors, 17 inches alloy wheels, and 225/50R17 tires.
1992.10 : There were some changes. The GTO adopts large size brakes, short stroke 5 speed manual transmission (twinturbo), improved 4 speed automatic transmission (NA model), and keyless entry system.
1993.08 : There were some changes including the face-lift. A fixed headlight
is adopted instead of the pop-up type headlights. The GTO twinturbo adopts
a new 6 speed manual transmission.
1994.08 : The GTO MR twinturbo was added to the GTO line-up. The GTO twinturbo MR is equipped with sports tuned suspension and BBS alloy wheels.
1995.08 : The GTO SR was added. The engine is a 2972cc V6 DOHC 6G72 engine that makes 225 horsepower and 28.0kg-m of torque.
1996.08 : The GTO got mild face-lift including new front and rear bumpers.
1998.08 : The GTO got mild face-lift including new front and rear bumpers, new headlight design, and a rear spoiler.
